Oregon Pear Trees Thrive
In Oregon, it seems, pear trees rule.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, pears other than Bartletts accounted for most of the fruit trees in Oregon, with 2.87 million trees. Bartletts on their own came in fourth.
Oregon has almost 8 million commercially grown fruit trees on 39,260 acres. That's a 6 percent increase in trees in the last 13 years. The total fruit-tree acreage, however, declined by 17 percent.
And in case you;re interested, sweet cherries were the second most popular trees, with 2.04 million trees, and apples were third with 1.92 million trees. Plums ranked fifth, peaches ranked sixth and tart cherries ranked seventh.
